This course focuses on central issues of concern for couples and families as they deal with cancer. It provides an overview of areas causing distress for couples, as well as discussion of coping and intervention strategies. It includes a section on helping children cope with a parent's illness, as well as information about general changes to social relationships of all kinds.
Course Syllabus
Objectives: - Explore relationship challenges for patients with cancer and be able to identify common difficulties with roles and intimacy.
- Understand the developmental stages of relationship and be able to identify areas of life disruption that occur in a relationship because of cancer.
- Identify problem communication styles and learn strategies for assisting with complex conversations.
- Learn how to help parents in communicating with their children about cancer and identify age-dependent reactions to life-threatening illnesses.
- Understand the many effects of cancer on partners and identify changes in functioning affecting intimacy and sexuality after cancer treatment.
- Explore the perspective of joy and emotional healing in relationships while facing illness.
