This course provides a strong basis for understanding how to provide skillful and creative advocacy for patients with cancer. The course invites reflection about your willingness and your capacity in your work as psychotherapist or counselor to provide these needed functions. References to useful and reliable internet resources are included. Skillful Advocacy also covers helping the patient with communication strategies and building appropriate communities of support.
Course Syllabus
Objectives:
- Learn strategies to inform yourself about the illness of cancer and be able to identify key potential sources of cancer information.
- Receive overview of reliable internet resources about the illness, treatment and psychosocial issues, and be able to list and recall effective web search strategies.
- Recognize central communication difficulties for patients and define ways to create useful new patterns.
- Assess patients' needs for support and identify creative alternatives to assist in building supportive communities in multiple environments.
- Understand and gain skill in the advocacy role and be able to describe how advocacy works within the therapeutic alliance.
